Within the framework of the France Relance national plan, the Martinique Marine Natural Park has concluded an initial partnership with the ICEA, Institut Catholique Européen des Amériques, for the implementation of a new University Diploma on the sea trades. A grant of €131,065 has been allocated by the French Office for Biodiversity to carry out this project.
Traditionally exploited for its natural food resources, the sea in Martinique has seen a strong economic development of its activities leading to a growing number of men and women sharing this marine space. In order to support all of these professional sectors towards sustainable development, the Martinique Marine Natural Park has been keen to provide strong support for the establishment of degree courses aimed at this objective. Thus, this University Diploma is in line with the challenges of the management plan of the Martinique Marine Natural Park, which aims to make the sea "a living space with diversified activities and practices, organised and compatible with the objectives of preserving the marine environment.
Jobs in the sea, jobs with a future
A source of life and income, it is estimated that 12% of the island's jobs are linked to the sea. Nearly three quarters of this blue economy is made up of coastal tourism, and a quarter of the jobs are in maritime transport and port services, professional fishing, maritime safety, sports and leisure activities, the naval industry, administration, training, aquaculture and research.
According to a 2016 study carried out by the Directorate for the Sea, various skill needs have been identified, in particular in the fields of professional yachting, nautical leisure, fishing, aquaculture and the nautical industry.
This training course is accessible to all holders of a general or vocational baccalaureate and provides instruction in management, tourism and leisure activities, marine ecology, protection of the coastal and marine environment and, more generally, everything related to fisheries resources and coastal and maritime services.
The proposed programme is a clever blend of legal, economic, social and environmental sciences and corresponds to the expectations of the Martinique Marine Natural Park in terms of sustainable development.
Numerous opportunities
At the end of this training, candidates should be able to join a team or manage a team, or even run a small business.
