A new public institution, a new force for biodiversity

The French Biodiversity Agency was created on 1st January 2020 to protect and restore biodiversity in Metropolitan France and its Overseas Territories. It is a public institution under the authority of the ministries responsible for Ecology and Agriculture & Food.

5 complementary roles:

  • Sharing knowledge, research and expertise about species, habitats and their uses
  • Environmental and wildlife health policing
  • Supporting the implementation of public policies
  • Assisting and supporting protected natural area managers
  • Supporting stakeholders and mobilising civil society.

Unprecedented data on the presence of anadromous migratory fish at sea

A team of researchers from several institutions, including the French Biodiversity Agency (OFB), has developed a new modeling approach to gain a better understanding of the distribution of anadromous migratory fish at sea. This method, applied to threatened species such as shad and the European eel, has led to major advances in their management at sea.

The French Biodiversity Agency showcases its expertise at the Regional Coastal and Marine Forum

The French Biodiversity Agency (OFB) is taking part in the 11th edition of the Regional Coastal and Marine Forum (FOMACO 2024), which is being held in Guinea Bissau from April 22 to 27, 2024. Initiated by the Regional Partnership for Coastal and Marine Conservation (PRCM), this forum is the most important meeting in West Africa for costal and marine conservation. The 11th edition was devoted to the conservation, resilience and sustainable development of the West African coastline in the face of global change.

A first list of endangered mushrooms in France

For the first time, the Red List of Threatened Species in France has focused on mushrooms, exploring the situation of boletes, milkcaps and tricholoma. Of the 319 species listed in these three groups in mainland France, 12 species are threatened, such as the ruby bolete, the reticulated willow milkwort and the oak bolete, while 16 others appear to be near-threatened.
