How to enhance water infiltration and mitigate urban heat island effects through nature based solutions ?
The feedback sheets developed by CDC-Biodiversité, the French UICN Committee, and the OFB as part of the Life ARTISAN project aim to inspire public and private decision-makers, planners, forest and agricultural landowners, or protected area managers interested in implementing a Nature-Based Solutions project. They offer insights into socio-economic and ecological contexts, funding sources, stakeholders, governance, implemented actions, outcomes, monitoring indicators, success factors, and recommendations.
The "Nature at the Cemetery" project in Meudon (2019-2050) significantly enhances urban ecology by improving runoff water infiltration and reducing gully erosion along the Seine River slopes through soil renaturation. The project also boosts the town’s resilience to heat waves by converting paved areas into vibrant green spaces, effectively linking the green corridor of Meudon Forest with the blue corridor of the Seine. Additionally, it creates a vital ecological staging area amid the urban fabric, offering 6,500 square meters of new habitats that support a diverse array of species including birds, bats, and pollinators, thus enriching local biodiversity and enhancing the area's ecological dynamics.
