Bay of Aiguillon : Implementing Nature-Based Solutions for Submersion Control

How can Nature-Based Solutions be effectively implemented for submersion control ?

The feedback sheets developed by CDC-Biodiversité, the French UICN Committee, and the OFB as part of the Life ARTISAN project aim to inspire public and private decision-makers, planners, forest and agricultural landowners, or protected area managers interested in implementing a Nature-Based Solutions project. They offer insights into socio-economic and ecological contexts, funding sources, stakeholders, governance, implemented actions, outcomes, monitoring indicators, success factors, and recommendations.

The Bay of Aiguillon project (2016-2050) aims to restore 118 hectares of mudflats to bolster coastline protection against submersion and enhance sedimentation functions. This restoration has revitalized the habitat for wintering waterfowl crucial to their migratory routes and improved the ecosystem’s overall health. The project also supports local economies by enhancing nature-based leisure activities and mussel farming, reducing competition from invasive oyster species. Additionally, restored mudflats serve as effective carbon sinks and improve water quality through natural filtration processes, contributing to the sustainability of local aquatic ecosystems.
